Each portrait reflects an experience of loss and explores ideas of death and remembrance. Grief and death come from various places: the loss of my grandmother’s cognitive abilities with her Alzheimer’s diagnosis and the dwindling connection to my Japanese culture, the overdose death of a close friend who suffered from mental illness, and the death of my companion dog who gave me emotional support, which felt like the death of my freedom.
